Our 8th grade team facilitated some great activities to inspire our students to read in support of our district goals! Students "Caught Reading" when not required earn tickets to enter in a raffle. Raegan H. won this month's prize: an Amazon Gift Card! Mr. McEvoy facilitated a team reading challenge where students collaborated with their peers to read as many books as possible. More challenging books were worth more points! The top 2 teams for quarter 3 celebrated with a pizza party before spring break. Congratulations to our winners! A tip of the hat to the 8th grade team for facilitating creative activities to motivate our students to read more!!! KEEP READING, STUDENTS!!! #InwardUpwardOnward

It is MULTICULTURAL MEAL APRIL at the Oak Street Cafeteria! Encourage your 5th through 12th grader to try these great meals that are authentic to the various world cultures! Tuesday - April 5th- Mexican Quesadilla with Pinto Beans (The quesadilla originated in Mexico with the Aztecs!) Wednesday - April 6th - Monte Cristo (The sandwich has its origins in France with the Croque Monsieur and is believed to be named after the character in the book, The Count of Monte Cristo by French author, Alexander Dumas.) Tuesday- April 18th - Mandarin Chicken and Jasmine Rice (China is the top producer of rice in the world and was the first country to domesticate it in the region around the Yangtze River.) Wednesday - April 26th - Greek chicken pita with Tzatziki sauce (Greece - The earliest-known written records and recipes of bread-making originate in the Mediterranean, where pita-like flatbreads cooked in a clay oven called a tinûru (tannur or tandoor) were a basic element of the diet. Pita is not just a bread. It is used as utensils (a spoon, bowl, a wrap or a pocket) as well.) Please encourage our secondary students to learn a little bit more about the cultures reflected in these great meal choices at Oak Street! Thank you to our Cafeteria Staff!!!

POSITIVITY PROJECT CHARACTER STRENGTH OF THE WEEK: HUMOR Dear Families, This week our school community will be focusing on the character strength of Humor. Humor means you like to laugh and bring smiles to other people. Humor is a sense of playfulness and lightness. It is a way of looking at and describing the world that brings laughter to people. A person with the strength of humor is skilled at seeing the funny side of things, bringing smiles and laughter to others, and identifying and communicating the absurdities in life. People with this strength don’t specifically need to be joke tellers, although many are. Humor plays an important role in helping groups of people rise above difficult circumstances and boost morale. It removes us from our present difficulties by easing tension and making life more fun. This is why athletic teams often need a jokester to help them get through tough losses and early morning fitness sessions. On a larger societal level, humor often helps downtrodden groups to find cohesion and strength. This is why Simon Wiesenthal said, “Humor is the weapon of unarmed people: it helps people who are oppressed smile at the situation that pains them.” To practice and encourage the character strength of humor with your child, please visit the Positivity Project’s P2 for Families (password: P2) where together you can watch a video, read a quote and talk about the answers to three questions. Please ask your students about their Social Emotional Learning lessons and discussions this week about humor!
